MINUTES OF THE
VENTURA COUNTY PHILATELIC SOCIETY
EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING JUNE 28, 2010
President, Tom Massa at Tom’s residence, called meeting to order at 7:40 PM. The following 7 Board
members were present: Tom Massa, George Lyon, Elliott Burfitt, Bill Garner, Frosty Godfrey, Steve Carroll
and John Weigle plus club member Jay Shoemaker.
The minutes of the May 2010 meeting were published in the June newsletter and on the website. There was
a motion to approve the minutes. Motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s report: The Treasurer reports $1339.66 in the General Fund and $2416.03 in the Youth Stamp
Fair Fund. Elliott gave Secretary, Bill Garner a check for Joyce Dickson.
The Secretary reported that we have 55 paid members renewed and new plus 2 honorary members.
Remember, you get $5.00 cool cash when you bring in a new paid member. Also, the 2010 Roster was
distributed to members. Corrections that were suggested will be made for the 2011 Roster.
The Vice-President is looking for program material. He reports the following:
July 5 – Henry Sandoval with philatelic material
Aug. 2 – Jim Waldron with more philatelic material
Sept 6 – Power Point presentation by Mel Dick.
Oct. 4 - Harold Lyle is back with more stamps
Nov. l – Open
Nov. 15 – YSF Award Night
Dec. 6 – 40 lot auction
Dec. 20 – Christmas Party
George will be off the 2nd meeting in July and the 1st in August. He prepared raffle and member drawing
material and gave to Bill Garner for use on the nights he will be off.
There was no President’s Report.
Topical sales books: Steve is still doing a great job. Talk them up.
The auction is doing well but Tom still would still like to see more different members contributing to the
auction so there could be more of a variety. Could use more U.S.
The Youth Stamp Fair mini-auction is doing very well.
The library still exists and is doing well, thanks to Steve Carroll. We have now purchased Vol.1 and 2 of
2011 Scott catalogs.
Community Activities:
Aug. 4-15 – Ventura County Fair – Sign up sheet is full, thank you.
Oct. 16 - Sat – Our 20th Anniv. Youth Stamp Fair at the Dudley House.
Our 501-C-4 IRS status was discussed and Elliott will check out the one page form on the Internet for filing
and he will submit it.
Purchasing a video/Power Point projector was discussed and it was decided that we would wait to see
how the show would go in September. The Federation has a projector available for use for free to member
clubs and we qualify for that. Jim Bowman is the contact.
The Secretary suggested that each Board member make a list of items we should include in a binder for
each Board Member and to be forwarded to new Board Members of things that should be known currently
and carried over for each year: such as description of each job and what is to be done each year – have a
calendar listing what happens when each month; who has keys to meeting room, the shed in Fillmore, etc.
Jay Shoemaker made a plea for the Friends of the Philatelic Library in Sunnyvale, CA, which is in need of
financial help. He made a request that the Board and the club members donate $100 to this worthwhile
organization. The Board made a motion that Jay bring this up to the membership at our next regular
meeting and have the members vote.
The Hong-Kong Auction was discussed for our January or February meeting. It takes a great deal of effort
and preparation but it is worth it for all the fun we get out of it.
Our next VCPS Board meeting will be held on THE LAST MONDAY OF July – the 26th at Steve Carroll’s. All
members are always invited to Board Meetings.
If you need directions to Steve’s house, see him at meetings or call him – his phone number is on the front
page of our roster.
The meeting was adjourned at an unheard of time of 8:45 PM. – a new record, I believe.
Respectfully submitted by Bill Garner, Secretary, VCPS

VENPEX 2007
STAMP EXHIBITION AND BOURSE
Was considered a SUCCESS!!
This was the first VENPEX since 2003 and wouldn't have been possible unless Mel Dick had
volunteered to chair the event and push all of us to make it a success. He and Frosty negotiated with
Stephen Pattillo to become the bourse chairman, and he attracted dealers who had never been to
VENPEX before. Their names are on the web site as a thank you and for readers to support them.
The show's two cachets and the cancel honoring U.S. Navy airships were popular with visitors and sold
well. They were designed by Phil Dockter of Glendale, CA, a 25-year member of the Southern
California Air Mail Society and a collector since the late 1960's.
We thank all who volunteered from the club and most people worked more than one shift. If we missed
anyone, we apologize.
The list:
Elliott Burfitt (who also provided the transportation for frames and then worked on repairing as many
as he could), Mel Dick (Chairman), Bill Garner, John Goldbach, Jerry Harwood, Jack Havicon, George
Lyon (Exhibits Chairman and assisted Elliott with getting the frames at the exhibit), Allan McComb,
Erik Thorlaksson, Ken and Sheri Oelschlager, Bill Pagel, Werner Scharnetzki, Dee Schmolinski, Doug
Turner, Ken Weber, Carolyn Weber, John Weigle and Tom Massa.
Thanks also is due to those who might not have been able to help but attended the show and patronized
the dealers.
Chairman, Mel Dick, noted that the Universal Ship Cancellation Society, "sent all kinds of material
that we put out, and all of it went very fast. Only one or two items were available the second day. I
would appreciate it if your could mention their support and encouragement in any 'thank yous'"
At the end of the show we had gained two new members and one renewal.
Ken and Carolyn Weber swept the awards with their exhibit - Aerogrammes of Papua New Guinea.
They took a gold and the grand (Judge Gregg Memorial Award), the Kurt Holschauer Memorial Award
for the Best British Empire exhibit, and the APS award for the best exhibit by an APS member.
Allen Klein received a gold and the reserve grand, provided by the Federated Philatelic Clubs of
Southern California, for USS Akron - Pride of the Navy: Covers Tell the Story of the Akron's
Contribution to Naval Aviation.
The most popular exhibit award, determined by votes of visitors to the show and donated by bourse
chairman Stephen Pattillo, went to Bill Schwartz's Soldiers' Story, and exhibit of letters and their
envelopes from several members of the same family who served in the Civil War. It also received a gold.
Other exhibits and their awards were as follows:
GOLD: Jerome V.V. Kasper, The Aerogrammes of Iceland.
Jerome V.V. Kasper, Australia's Official Aerogrammes.
Stephen Tucker, the Dhows of Aden -- First Issue of the Crown Colony
VERMEIL: Mel Dick, the Life and Career of the USS Lexington (CV2) in Time of Peace and War.
George Lyon, Costa Rica, The 1901 Issue.
John Weigle, United States Auxilliary Labels.
The judges were: Chairman, Wallace Craig; David Leeds; and Richard Willing.

THREE METHODS FOR FINDING THE VALUE OF YOUR COLLECTION
First Method: See if you can find a local stamp club. There are usually very knowledgeable people in the
club who can assist with what you want to do--maybe even offer to evaluate your stamps free of charge.
Your local post office might have advertisements for the stamp club on their bulletin board. Alternately,
you can go to the American Philatelic Society Web site and click on their "Local Clubs"; link to find
stamp clubs in your area. Shortcomings: The only real shortcoming here is that there might not be a
stamp club in your area.
Second Method: Scott Publishing Company prints a yearly catalog entitled, "Scott Catalog U.S.
Specialized". This catalog shows pictures and lists market values for all U.S. postal items that have a
Scott number associated with them. It even lists individual values for the different plate numbers and
positions. As of 2005 Scott will be including full-color stamp illustrations. The cost of this catalog is $55.
If you are a member of Amos Advantage the cost is somewhat less (see note below). You can order the
catalog online at Scott Online:• Scroll down and on the left side in the Browse Products section
you will eventually see Scott catalogs. Ordering information can be found through this link.
Note #1: You can become a member of Amos Advantage by subscribing to one of their three paid
subscription services (including Linn's Stamp News, Scott Stamp Monthly, or Coin World), or you can
register online by clicking on the Amos Advantage link on the left side of their initial web page.
Note #2: You might check with your local public library. Many libraries carry Scott's catalog in their
reference section. Shortcomings:This is probably the best way to go if you want a precise market value
of all of your stamps individually. The only shortcoming (if you'd call it a "shortcoming") is the cost of
the catalog. It is comparably more expensive than the other catalogs you can use to do your own
research.
Third Method: If you want to just get an evaluation of a complete collection maybe for insurance or
selling purposes, you might consider hiring an expert. This could be a collectibles or antiques dealer, a
certified stamp specialist, or, as mentioned in Method 4, could be someone in the local stamp club. It
might be somewhat more expensive than the above methods and the evaluation won't be as complete
and detailed. We would imagine that insurance companies would require an expert evaluation in order
to determine premiums. Shortcomings: Like stated above, this type of evaluation will probably be
somewhat more expensive than doing your own research and the evaluation won't be as complete as if
the stamps are individually evaluated.
Tip: If you choose this method of evaluation, one thing that you should never do is ask, "What is this
collection worth?"; and then immediately follow that question with, "And how much will you give me
for it?"; This can create an ethical dilemna for the evaluator. If you do pay an expert to evaluate the
stamps, make sure that person is only doing it for the purpose of evaluating the worth. Don't mention
beforehand that you are interested in selling the collection as well.
