VENPEX 2007
STAMP EXHIBITION AND BOURSE
Was considered a SUCCESS!!
This was the first VENPEX since 2003 and wouldn't have been possible unless Mel Dick had
volunteered to chair the event and push all of us to make it a success. He and Frosty negotiated
with
Stephen Pattillo to become the bourse chairman, and he attracted dealers who had never been to
VENPEX before. Their names are on the web site as a thank you and for readers to support them.
The show's two cachets and the cancel honoring U.S. Navy airships were popular with visitors
and sold
well. They were designed by Phil Dockter of Glendale, CA, a 25-year member of the Southern
California Air Mail Society and a collector since the late 1960's.
We thank all who volunteered from the club and most people worked more than one shift. If we
missed
anyone, we apologize.
The list:
Elliott Burfitt (who also provided the transportation for frames and then worked on repairing as
many
as he could), Mel Dick (Chairman), Bill Garner, John Goldbach, Jerry Harwood, Jack Havicon,
George
Lyon (Exhibits Chairman and assisted Elliott with getting the frames at the exhibit), Allan McComb,
Erik Thorlaksson, Ken and Sheri Oelschlager, Bill Pagel, Werner Scharnetzki, Dee Schmolinski,
Doug
Turner, Ken Weber, Carolyn Weber, John Weigle and Tom Massa.
Thanks also is due to those who might not have been able to help but attended the show and
patronized
the dealers.
Chairman, Mel Dick, noted that the Universal Ship Cancellation Society, "sent all kinds of material
that we put out, and all of it went very fast. Only one or two items were available the second day. I
would appreciate it if your could mention their support and encouragement in any 'thank yous'"
At the end of the show we had gained two new members and one renewal.
Ken and Carolyn Weber swept the awards with their exhibit - Aerogrammes of Papua New
Guinea.
They took a gold and the grand (Judge Gregg Memorial Award), the Kurt Holschauer Memorial
Award
for the Best British Empire exhibit, and the APS award for the best exhibit by an APS member.
Allen Klein received a gold and the reserve grand, provided by the Federated Philatelic Clubs of
Southern California, for USS Akron - Pride of the Navy: Covers Tell the Story of the Akron's
Contribution to Naval Aviation.
The most popular exhibit award, determined by votes of visitors to the show and donated by bourse
chairman Stephen Pattillo, went to Bill Schwartz's Soldiers' Story, and exhibit of letters and their
envelopes from several members of the same family who served in the Civil War. It also received a gold.
Other exhibits and their awards were as follows:
